Keep your skin looking young!

Many of the causes of aging skin come down to health and lifestyle decisions you make every day. Making unhealthy choices can cause prematurely aging skin, and this makes you look older, much faster. This is what you must avoid! An important part of any anti-aging skin care program is to know what you may be doing that is harming your skin, and unfortunately, speeding up your skin's aging process. Here are some habits that contribute to aging skin, things to avoid doing to make you look older than your years...

Smoking: The ‘buzz’ word relating to premature aging. Whether you smoke, or you spend time with a smoker, cigarette smoke is very damaging, and indeed aging on your skin. Cigarette smoke significantly increases skin wrinkles and dryness. This is due to the behaviour of smoking, and also as cigarette smoke depletes your body of Vitamin C, which is a main ingredient in keeping skin plump and moist.

Sun exposure: If you have freckles, they can turn into brown sun spots and skin takes on a dry, leathery appearance, and wrinkles increase too. The risk of skin cancer is also significantly increased by sun exposure. However, the good news is that sun damage is avoidable, and if you start now, you can improve the condition of any sun damaged skin. If you want to avoid aging skin but don’t want to avoid the sun, make sure you use sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays. Try and use a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher if possible, and use it all year-round, even on cloudy days (times when you still won’t be protected)

Lack of exercise: Remaining stationary during the day (i.e. sitting on a chair in your office) contributes to aging skin, because exercise helps to tone your muscles and gets the circulation going. Exercise should be an important part of every anti-aging skin care program.

Stress: Maybe you’ve heard this rumour that if you frown into the wind your facial expression may stay that way for eternity? Well it’s not too far from the truth as it happens. Stress and worry will cause frowning, and over time the muscles in your face will actually conform to that movement. To help lessen aging skin due to stress, be aware of your stress level and try to vary your facial expressions during the day. And remember - smiling is the best cure for a frown!

Lack of sleep: Not enough sleep makes you look and feel really tired. The first place not enough sleep will be evident is your face with dark circles and bags under the eyes, and sagging skin. Research has shown that most adults function best with 8-9 hours of sleep each night. Reducing your caffeine intake during the day, avoiding eating at least 2 hours before sleeping, and maintaining a sleep routine that includes going to bed at the same time each night will also make you feel a whole lot better.  .

It’s true that some signs of aging skin are inevitable over time.  There is a lot you can do to look your best at any age, and taking good care of yourself is the most important step in your anti-aging skin care program.
