Why should I use toner on my skin?

Although the average woman should be taking care of their skin year round, summer is the season when most people usually take their skin care regimen really seriously. To control all of the dirt, oil and clogging that can be brought about by the warm weather season, I asked the question: What's the secret weapon to healthy summer skin?

The answer: toner.

During summertime, it is so important not to pile on extra makeup just to mask acne and oily build-up problems. Instead, try using a gentle, soothing toner to remove oil and traces of dirt and grime. Toners are necessary and most helpful for people with oily or acne-prone skin, or for people who just want extra cleansing after wearing makeup or other heavy skin products such as sun screen or after-sun.

But toner doesn’t just stop at being good for its cleansing properties...

Pore shrinking - Applying a small amount of toner, like Dr Olen Gin’s Magic Mineral Facial Toner (www.olengin.com) to a soft cotton ball or pad and gently dabbing and wiping your face with it will remove oil and give the appearance of smaller pores.

pH Balancing -  Facial skin is naturally acidic, normally with a pH balance of between five and six. After cleansing, the pH balance of skin is likely to be disturbed due to the alkaline nature of soap. When this happens your skin works overtime to restore the balance (and that may result in a little extra oil), but using a good quality toner helps to restore this balance quickly and effectively.

It will add a layer of protection – Good toners help close pores and tighten cell gaps after cleansing, therefore reducing the saturation of impurities and hazardous elements into the skin. It can even protect and remove chlorines and minerals present in tap water (which can be harmful)

It moisturizes - Some toners are humectants, (at least, the less astringent ones) which means that they help to bind moisture to the skin. This also means you won’t have to use as much moisturiser each morning and night.

It refreshes skin

Toner can also be used in lieu of washing your skin when it's oily or just plain grimy. It will leave your skin revitalized, even when you're on-the-go. It’s a great invention, and great for working women looking for a quick freshen-up, and is as useful as the phenomenon that is dry-shampoo!

It can prevent ingrown hairs - Toners containing glycolic, citric acid and algae extracts can help to prevent ingrown hairs (such as Dr Olen Gin’s Magic Mineral Facial Toner) so it also aids in grooming (i.e. Men can use it too!)
